Media now a days tells you that you have to look a certain way, have a specific lifestyle, etc. in order to be happy. People start to compare themselves to fiction characters played on TV shows or movies. In the mist of all of this, we tend to start to compare ourselves to each other. Who has the better outfit? Am I skinny enough? Will I ever be as successful as him or her? Will I ever have a lot of money? We are so busy dwelling in other people's lives that we don't take the time to truly think about what would make yourself happy.
I will admit, I have been a victim to the media comparison multiple times in my life. But, I eventually found my authentic self and am learning to embrace who I am and starting to live the life that truly makes me happy. Now, I know your wondering, how will I know if I am being my authentic self? How will I know that I am living the life of my dreams? Here are some of the ways I re-evaluated my life and figured out who I was and what makes me happy. (This is not a post about goal setting, this is simply a guide to help understand who you are and what your dream life is versus what the media tells you who you should be and what you have to do in order to be successful.)
First step is to turn off any media devices. Internet, TV, Tablet, Social Media, etc. Turn it all off. Get yourself a nice journal or even a piece of paper. Answer the following questions and you will soon will start to understand who you truly are and what will make you happy.
WHAT ARE MY STRENGTHS?
What are you good at? Are you a good listener? Or are you very organized? It doesn't have to all be related to business. It can be personal. Do people like to come to you for advice? Are you great at cooking? Write down as many strengths that you can think of.
WHAT ARE MY WEAKNESSES?
Now, think about things that you can improve in your life. Is it communication? Is it becoming more organized? This will help you become more aware of who you are. Now think of one way you can improve yourself for each of the weaknesses you wrote down. For example, my weakness is doubting myself. One way I can improve is for every doubt, I write a motivating message and read it to myself in the mirror.
WHAT DO I LOVE DOING IN MY SPARE TIME?
Do you have any hobbies? Dancing, reading, collecting stuffed animals? Whatever you love doing while you are not busy working, write them down in your journal.
WHAT IS MY DREAM JOB?
I shouldn't even use the word job. If you are doing something you love, you are never truly working. Think about your ideal career, what do you see yourself doing for the next 10 years? You don't have to have a specific job, you can just have an idea of what you dream of doing such as helping people or owning your own business.
WHAT ARE MY VALUES?
What do you find the most important to yourself. Is it family, trust, happiness? List out the things you value the most. Then try to list them from most important to least Important. Here you will start to reveal who you are.
What is My Typical Day?
What is the day in your life like right now? Right down what you do in a day from the moment you wake up to the moment you go to bed.
WHAT IS MY IDEAL DAY?
Now create a schedule that you dream of having. Such as wake up and go to a beautiful coffee shop or don't have to wake up to an alarm. In this schedule, it can include anything. Don't think about what others do or what you think you should be doing. Write out the schedule that you dream of having.
WHAT IS MY DREAM LIFESTYLE?
Now that you have written out the dream schedule down, think about the overall picture. What do you want to do in the next few years. Do you want to travel the world more? Do you want to spend more time with your family? Do you want to be able to give back to the community? Start brainstorming things that you are longing to do. No matter what it is, jot it down. This is your dream and only you will live it, don't let others dictate your happiness.
WHAT ARE MY FEARS?
What are you afraid of? Is it rejection from your family or friends. Is it making enough money? Is it failure? Write down all the fears you may have. Then take each fear and write one piece of evidence that disapproves your fear.
WHO AM I?
Now that you have answered all of the previous questions, you should be able to answer the final question. Who am I? This is your authentic self. Embrace who you truly are. There is only one you and God don't make mistakes. You were made in his image and you are an amazing person. Don't let anyone or anything tell you otherwise. You have what it takes. Go ahead and let your light shine.
